Martial Artist Poppy Tomkinson tells us about how Scouting inspired her to victory!
Taekwondo World Champion (and Explorer at Canotila ESU) Poppy, talks to our Media Team about her recent successes in her sport…
So Poppy, how long have you been involved in both Scouting and Taekwondo?
I’ve been doing Taekwondo since the age of six and I joined 1st Calow Scouts when I was 11. With them I have had some amazing experiences such as going to Peak 2010 and, after that, going to Canada to stay with the Scout Group they’re twinned with in Ontario,
Brilliant, so what have you been doing recently?
I’ve recently competed at the ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) World Championships in the UK. I competed in 8 events, both individually and with the England Girls team from across the country.
So how did you do?
My girls team overall won 3 Silvers in the Team Patterns, Team Sparring & Team Destruction and I won a Gold Medal in the individual Patterns. I feel really proud to have taken part and especially now I have become World Champion!
Has being a Scout helped you to become a Champion?
Certainly, Scouts and Explorers have provided me with many friends that have helped me to remain focused and to be dedicated to what I do. As a Young Leader I feel very privileged to share my success in Taekwondo with my Beavers, hopefully inspiring them to keep on Scouting and do amazing things!
