Attractions

Spitewinter Campsite has four acres of sloping woodland with open camping areas, on the fringe of the Peak District National Park a well known area for walking with easy access to “Open Country”. For those with the equipment and instructors there are ample opportunities for rock climbing, abseiling, caving and canoeing. There is a sports centre and swimming baths at Chesterfield and both Matlock and Clay Cross have swimming baths.In nearby Matlock Bath where the River Derwent runs through a deep limestone gorge, there are natural caves and old lead mines, a petrifying well and lead minning museum, and also Gullivers Kingdom Model Village. There is also the heights of Abraham a cable car system operating in Matlock bath, with show caverns and 60 acres of wooded hillside.

Arkwright Original Mill at Cromford is open to the public and not far away is the start of the Highpeak Trail where groups may hire cycles and ride the route of the old peak railway.

At Crich there is a working tramway museum where visitors can ride on vintage trams and “The Crich Stand”, a memorial to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment.

Chatsworth House / Farmland / Adventure Playground and Haddon Hall are both within 7 miles, whilst the nearby market town of Bakewell also has many historical buildings and a busy Monday Market.

Nearer to the campsite, Ashover is a quiet village that was a busy lead mining and quarrying centre and only half a mile from the campsite is the oldest industrial chimney in the county at the stone edge smelter site. Chesterfield has a twice weekly market, excellent shopping facillities and the famous “Crooked Spire”.
